Tumors of the appendix are rare, accounting for only 0.5-1.5% of all gastrointestinal tumors. They can be classified into several types, including: 1. Carcinoid tumors (most common): Typically slow-growing, often asymptomatic, and may produce hormones. 2. Adenocarcinomas: Malignant tumors that can invade surrounding tissues and spread to other organs. 3. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs): Rare, typically benign, but can be malignant. 4. Leiomyomas: Benign smooth muscle tumors. 5. Lymphomas: Rare, typically involve the appendix as part of systemic disease. 6. Metastatic tumors: Rare, usually from primary tumors in other organs. Symptoms may include: Abdominal pain Nausea and vomiting Appendicitis-like symptoms (if the tumor causes obstruction) Intestinal obstruction Weight loss Anemia Diagnosis is often incidental during appendectomy for suspected appendicitis. Treatment depends on the tumor type and stage: Carcinoid tumors: Appendectomy, sometimes with additional surgery or hormone therapy Adenocarcinomas: Appendectomy, chemotherapy, and sometimes radiation therapy GISTs: Appendectomy, sometimes with additional surgery or targeted therapy Leiomyomas: Appendectomy Lymphomas: Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgery Metastatic tumors: Treatment depends on the primary tumor's origin and stage Prognosis varies depending on the tumor type, stage, and treatment. Early detection and treatment are crucial for optimal outcomes. #Appendix
