The fifth talk of the Elementary Lecture Series: Exploring The Landscape of Chemistry is given by Professor Malcolm H Levitt on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance: Epitome of Quantum Dynamics Abstract of the Talk: Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a spectroscopic technique involving the interaction of atomic nuclei with radio waves. Although the phenomenon was first demonstrated in the 1940’s it is still under rapid development and continues to throw up new surprises. The method is routinely used in chemical laboratories as a means to determine the structure of molecules in solution but extends into almost all fields of science, including quantum computing, fundamental physics, materials science, structural biology, metabolomics, and clinical imaging (in the form of MRI). Prof. Levitt will try to give an overview of the field and discuss the special features of NMR which have allowed it to retain its vitality for over 70 years. He will also discuss some of the latest developments in the field including nuclear hyperpolarization, zero-field NMR, and the NMR of single atomic nuclei by nanoscale magnetometry. About the Speaker: Prof. Malcolm H Levitt is a Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Southampton, UK. His primary area of research is Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), in which he has won several international awards. He is the author of ‘Spin Dynamics’, a well-received textbook on NMR. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and serves on the editorial boards of several journals, including Magnetic Resonance and the Journal of Magnetic Resonance.
