Beautiful Communities: Our Visions for Creative Placemaking celebrates the power of imagination and creativity, facilitated by national creative placemaking leaders Marty Pottenger, Mark Valdez, and Scott Oshima. Ben Stone, Director of Design and Creative Placemaking at the National Endowment for the Arts, kicks off the event, followed by a collective grounding activity led by Scott Oshima that invites attendees to stir up some chaos and noise. Marty Pottenger shares six impacts of creativity engagement, including how creativity “taps into flexible intelligence” and “inspires the courage to take risks.” She offers examples of using the arts to reframe conversations around economic inequities and racial discrimination with partners ranging from minimum-wage workers to millionaires to municipal employees. Mark Valdez continues illuminating the power of creativity, sharing The Most Beautiful Home…Maybe, a project incorporating theater, dance, and games to facilitate community conversations around affordable housing policies in four cities. Together, Marty and Mark invite attendees to imagine poignant moments from their creative placemaking experiences and envision possibilities for the sector in five years. Our Town grantees M. Simone Boyd and Yvonne De La Rosa share snapshots of their worlds in 2030, full of laughter and belonging while uplifting the next generation of culture bearers, adding to the cascade of attendees’ beautiful visions in the chat. Scott rounds off the session with a weather forecast, inviting Our Town Resource team members to share what they see happening in their communities in 2030. Ben Stone closes the event with an announcement of the new CPTA website, appreciation for the CPTA team, and shoutouts and well wishes from former members of the CPTA program.
