"The question is not whether we can afford to act – it is whether we can afford not to" At the "Closing the Gaps in Stroke Care" event held by SAFE and ESO at the EU parliament in Brussels in October 2025, MEP Romana Jerković (S&D, Croatia) called for stroke to be placed at the centre of the upcoming EU Cardiovascular Health Plan. With 1.1 million Europeans experiencing stroke every year, and annual costs exceeding €60 billion, coordinated EU and national action is urgently needed to improve prevention, rehabilitation and long-term support. The Stroke Action Plan for Europe provides a strong foundation that shows what progress looks like and what can be achieved by turning this knowledge into action.
