There is no line of demarcation between the jejunum and the ileum however there are some differences between them for medical practice. The jejunum has thicker/more muscular wall than ileum. The jejunum has wider lumen (4cm) than ileum (3.5cm). The jejunum has longer and closely packed circular folds (plicae circulares) while in ileum are smaller and loosely packed. The jejunum has 2 rows of arterial arcades with longer vasa recta while the ileum has 4 rows of arterial arcades with shorter vasa recta. The ileum has fat in its mesentery than the jejunum (peritoneal windows appear Opaque in ileum/translucent in jejunum). The jejunum has more numerous, longer, thicker and leaf-like villi than the ileum (less, shorter, thinner and finger-like).
