The Pink Tank is a former Soviet World War II-era heavy tank (IS-2, known as Tank No. 23) that once stood as the Monument to Soviet Tank Crews in Prague’s Smíchov district from 1945 until 1991. In April 1991, Czech artist David Černý and friends famously painted it bright pink in a provocative act of civil disobedience, challenging its legacy as a Soviet symbol—especially in the post-communist era when many Czechs saw it as a reminder of occupation rather than liberation. His gesture sparked public debate, brief arrest, and even a repainting back to pink by members of parliament in protest.
