This gentleman came with a tumor on the eyelid. This is a benign tumor called neurofibroma. Because of this condition, he had not opened his eye since soon after birth. This tumor has involved his eyelid and the surrounding area as well as the eyelid margin. He did not meet people as he was embarrassed. He lived an isolated life. I operated on him. This surgery is challenging as it is difficult to separate the normal eye structures from the tumor tissue. The tumor is diffuse and spread within the normal eye muscles and other structures and it is often difficult to distinguish the two. The tumor has to be removed and the normal muscle that has been stretched for so long needs to be tightened as well. Meticulous marking and expertise in distinguishing anatomy are needed in this surgery. He was comfortable after I gave him an anesthesia injection around to eye to numb the area. He was awake but didn’t feel pain. He went home immediately after surgery. You can see his post-operative journey at the end of the surgery, the next day, 1 week, and one month post-op.
