Coach Arika Ontiveros, head coach at Quartz Hill High and a 2009 graduate of the school, reflects on mentoring the girls soccer program at her alma mater and guiding the Royals to a 2-0 victory against Salinas High in the inaugural CIF Division 3 state girls soccer final at Natomas High in Sacramento. Ontiveros helped organize a police escort for the Royals during their departure from school on their trip to Sacramento, which completed a memorable season that had Quartz Hill become the first CIF-Southern Section girls soccer program to win a state championship. Mater Dei also joined that group by capturing the Division 1 state crown at Natomas. The Royals won their final 17 contests, producing 14 shutouts, and didn't surrender a goal in their final seven matches of the season. Quartz Hill had 19 shutouts overall, securing Division 3 section, Southern California Regional and state titles. Ontiveros, who was mentored at Quartz Hill by Chuck Gordon and now works on his coaching staff at Antelope Valley College, benefited from an experienced Royals roster that also contributed to Cal Elite SC winning the Under-19 title in June at the U.S. Soccer Far West Regionals in Boise, Idaho, which earned them a berth at nationals.
