The Choir of Trinity College Cambridge, conducted by Stephen Layton, performs Arnold Bax's 'This Worldes Joie', recorded live in concert in Heilig-Kreuz-Münster, Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, on the 19th July 2018. Arnold Bax is known primarily for his orchestral works, but also wrote a substantial number of choral pieces – mostly secular, but some religious. Although a nominal member of the Church of England, Paul Spicer has argued that ‘None of Bax’s choral music can be described as devotional or even suitable for church use [...] Here is a secular composer writing voluptuous music’. Bax was a lover of poetry and a keen poet himself, writing under the pseudonym of Dermot O’Byrne. This Worldes Joie is a setting of a poem written in Middle English circa 1300, the author of which is unknown.
