During the 18th and 19th centuries the medieval towers of Château de Foix were converted into a prison serving the department of Ariège in Southwest France. The prison held prisoners before trial or serving short sentences. Many of the prisoners were peasants caught removing wood to be used as fuel from forests belonging to aristocrats, or following the French Revolution from state forests. This phenomenon reflects the state of people living in rural areas who lacked access to resources in their surrounding during the pre-industrial era. Once serving feudal lords, Château de Foix was repurposed as a prison, windows were fitted with iron bars and strong doors with heavy locks were installed. Prisoners engraved graffiti on the walls of the castle's round tower, including names, dates, symbols and their own convictions or feelings about the circumstances of their imprisonment. In 1823, three prisoners escaped the highest cell of the round tower by sawing a window's iron bars and preparing a thick rope made of plaited straw for several days. Using their rope to descend the tower, one of the prisoners fell on the rocks below and was badly injured, the other two prisoners were never recaptured. • Become a patron and keep my quest to document French heritage up and running: / danshachar • For printable wall art of France: https://www.etsy.com/shop/InstantPhot... • Contact me for photos of Graffiti Engraved by Prisoners in Château de Foix Attribution: Hour Of The Witch by Scott Buckley | / scottbuckley Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...
