Between September 3 and 5, 1941, these experiments resulted in the deaths of about 600 Soviet POWs and 250 sick Poles. Later, a gas chamber was converted from the mortuary to crematorium I in the main camp. In this room, hundreds of individuals may perish at once. In theory, all Jews who were deemed unfit for labour due to their age or physical condition were executed immediately after entering the camp without being registered or given a number. A significant number of Soviet POWs, estimated by witnesses to number several thousand men, were also gassed to death in addition to the Jews. Additionally, a certain number of Poles perished in the gas chamber. The majority of the captives who were initially chosen and executed in a gas chamber outside of the camp, at the Sonnenstein euthanasia institute, were Poles. It is also known that groups of selected Poles from the so-called camp hospital, numbering up to several hundred at a time, were killed in gas chambers as punishment for the uprising of the prison company or after being found guilty and given a death sentence by a summary court. The gas chambers also claimed the lives of several thousand Gypsies. Between mid-1941 and the spring of 1943, when selection took place at the camp, prisoners of different nationalities also passed away, typically in the blocks for the sick.
