Channel Tunnel Remains at Hougham Battery Deep Shelter from WW2

The three-gun Hougham Battery, to the West of Dover, was completed in 1941. Armed with three Mk 8, 203mm 8-inch Naval artillery guns in large concrete emplacements, with integral magazines beneath, we will enter one of these emplacements in the next episode of this series so please subscribe to see next Thursdays video. The Battery site was located on the cliffs above what is now Samphire Hoe, with observation posts on the cliff edge, and the three-gun positions on raised ground directly behind. Due to the building of the A20 road, which dissected the battery, most of the surface buildings were demolished. However, some parts remain underground (although entrances have been buried), including a combined Fortress and Battery Plotting Room; the magazines for the three guns and a Dressing Station. Between 1988 and 1994 the crews for the Channel Tunnel used Hougham Battery Dressing Station as a training centre for medical and escape purposes. This included modifying some areas of the deep shelter and the addition of modern electrical distribution and electrical lighting. Some of this can still be seen in the Deep Shelter Dressing Station in the video.
