A visual tour through the early days of Playa del Rey. From the hunting lodges along the edge of the lagoon to the demise of the Motordrome and the Pavillion. Beautiful high-res historical photographs and 'Still-to-motion' transitions aplenty. Historical Footnotes: Tell’s Lookout lasted from 1871-1874. In 1877, an irishman named Michael Duffy took the lodge and called it Hunter’s Cottage. It was washed away by a storm several years later. Back then, the larger area surrounding the lagoon was known as ‘Rancho Ballona’. In 1887, a man named Moye Wick’s began dredging in the lagoon with hopes of creating an inner harbor called Port Ballona. The force of the ocean tides proved to be too much and the effort was abandoned in 1889. The Motordrome burned down in 1913 and the fire was blamed on vagrants. The Pleasure Pavilion also burned down in 1913. For years, it had been battered by ocean waves. The pavilion served as an inspiration for Abbott Kinney, whose Venice Boardwalk opened in 1905. The Balloon Route Excursion tour ran from 1901 - 1908 and stopped at the Pavillion for lunch, before continuing down to Redondo beach and then returning to Hollywood. All for $1. Prior to Rancho Ballona and the farmers of the 1800’s and the Spanish Missions of the late 1700’s, the area was populated by Tongvan and Gabrielino tribes dating back to 10,000 BC. NOTE: The cameras from the early 20th century (4x5 cameras) had lenses that are virtually impossible to replicate with modern lenses. The spatial relationship between all the objects in any given shot are remarkably different. I tried the best I could, often with multiple visits. I had more exact results with photos from later decades.
