Batman Returns Suite | from The Sound of Cinema

Danny Elfman's score for Batman Returns remains one of my faves! It's a really long, really dense operatic score with a brilliant instrumentation that blends the musical identities of all three main characters (Batman, Penguin and Catwoman) seamlessly. While some people would consider the score to the first installment (Batman, 1989) superior, I disagree. The original film's orchestration never sounded right to me, in particular the use of woodwinds on top of brass (in particular regarding Batman's theme). In this film, Batman's theme tends to be in brass mostly. However, the instances in which it's played solely by woodwinds (or solely by strings) are gorgeous and really stand out. The use of piano never sat right with me either (and remains my least favourite part of this score. Luckily it is much less prevalent this time around). Elfman really knocks it out of the park with Penguin's theme, which is played in a really wide range of emotions and instruments (you can read my Notes on the score if you're interested:   / batman-returns-20448711  . I also love Catwoman's theme, especially in her transformation scene. Elfman's use of strings for her music is a very welcome addition to the Batman mythos, in my opinion. I hope you enjoy this suite as much as I enjoy the score! I certainly had a good time working on it.
