Bypassing the Blood-Brain Barrier: Treating Parkinson’s Disease | Amirah Aly | TEDxNortheasternU

“What if I told you that the key to treating a neurodegenerative disease, such as Parkinson’s, could be as simple as a nasal spray?” This talk focuses on Dr. Amirah Aly’s belief that intranasal drug delivery to the brain is the key to treating neurodegenerative disease, and that this approach has the potential to make gene therapies a reality for the millions of patients suffering worldwide. She is currently working on developing therapeutic approaches for treating Huntington disease as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Former Northeastern student Dr. Amirah Aly is working on developing therapeutic approaches for treating Huntington Disease. As a pharmacy student at Kuwait University, Amirah realized that she wanted to be involved with medical research that has the potential to provide patients with better treatment options and to help improve their quality of life. This led her to join the Waszczak lab at Northeastern University, where she earned her PhD in Pharmacology. In her free time she enjoys hiking, biking the seawall, and trying Vancouver’s best coffee and donut shops.
