Bradley J. Birzer is the Russell Amos Kirk Professor in American Studies at Hillsdale College. He earned his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Indiana University. He serves on the boards of the Free Enterprise Institute and the Center for Cultural Renewal. He also serves as fellow or scholar at the Foundation for Economic Education, the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, the McConnell Center, and the Center for Economic Personalism. He has written for numerous publications, including the Imaginative Conservative, a site he co-founded, Ignatius Insight, National Review, and Catholic World Report. He is the author of several books, including J. R. R. Tolkien's Sanctifying Myth: Understanding Middle-Earth, American Cicero: The Life of Charles Carroll, and In Defense of Andrew Jackson. Xenophon wrote that a successful general “must be resourceful, active, careful, hardy, and quick-witted; he must be both gentle and brutal, at once straightforward and designing, capable of both caution and surprise, lavish and rapacious, generous and mean, skillful in defense and attack.” This third CCA of the 2019-2020 academic year will consider the lives and characters of some of America’s greatest generals.
