Wien Dystopie, Op. 76, is a symphonic poem for harp and orchestra. It was conceived in 2025 for the 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss II (1825-1899), with the idea of using various themes that Strauss never published, but which are preserved in their original orchestrations. The conceptual complexity of Wien Dystopie lies in how to present these themes while preserving Strauss's spirit and original writing in a contemporary work. WIEN-DYSTOPIE, Op.76 portrays a dystopian future in Vienna, in the 30th century, where humanity suffers from the aftermath of catastrophic wars and natural disasters, leading to widespread despair and deprivation. In a world stripped of knowledge, art, and the ability to envision the future, human life is diminished to an animalistic existence. Amidst this bleak environment, an elderly woman discovers an ancient AI device that can capture sounds of hope and illusion from any time in history. Her only wish is to transform that disconsolate present. She then imagines that perhaps this device could grant forgotten sensations and knowledge, through hearing something unknown. The woman activates the device out of intuition and innate curiosity. The machine, generating wonder and fear, slowly begins to emit complex, disconcerting, and strange sounds. Upon activating it, the device chooses to play melodies by Johann Strauss, which gradually enchant her and others around her, transforming their emotions. Despite the device eventually losing power, the music initiates a shift in feelings, igniting hope and the longing to rebuild civilization.
