This is Sterling Forest State Park located right on the New York / New Jersey border. The park stretches over 19+ aces of land and was originally owned by Sterling Iron Works which mined, you guessed it, iron! Mountain biking in Sterling Forest is what I’d call an ongoing work in progress. Trail builders seem to be constantly tweaking and expanding to get everything perfectly dialed in. The 8 mile loop we’re riding today includes Redback, parts of Hutchinson, even includes the newly finished eagle trail. Add those of all up, throw in a little snow and ice for good measure, and you get a boat load of climbing and plenty of slips and misadventures along the way. My guest today is just a regular guy named Gene. When he’s not riding his bike, Gene is the force behind YouTube’s critically acclaimed Regular Guy Mountain Biking channel. Gene sent out the RBMTB bike signal and we answered the call. Join us as we try to keep the party on the pedals and not fall flat on our faces. I’m your host Jordan Byron, and this is Jordan Byron Mountain Biking. The first third of our adventure was, to put it mildly, a bit of a meat grinder, and my skinny tires were not making it any easier. As Gene so aptly put it, I brought a knife to a gun fight. At the end of our, let’s call it a death march, up Redback, we had a truly incredible treat in store. These swoopy, flowy trails gave our legs a break and brought some much needed levity and joy to our ride. As the day wore on and the temperatures crept higher and higher above freezing, my grip problem only got worse. Practically begging for mercy, on the brink of a mental break, there was a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Downhill. Pure, beautiful, technical downhill back to the parking lot. Just what the doctor ordered! I want to thank everyone I met on today’s ride, and give a special thanks to Gene for organizing the meet up. You’ve just had a small taste of what Sterling Forest has to offer. Once the snow melts, let’s come back and see what these trails can really do when the tire sticks to the ground. Thank you so much for watching. If you are new to the channel, I’m on a mission to ride and document every trail in and around New England. Click subscribe and come along for the ride. Now it’s your turn, get out there and ride!
