200 Feet Deep: Inside The Grand Canyon Caverns

The Grand Canyon Caverns Inn was a convenient and key stop on our route. This motel is a critical spot, as this is where we had to complete our check-in and pick up the necessary permits for our upcoming Havasupai trek. Beyond its function as an Inn with surface-level lodging, the complex offers unique dining experiences both above and below ground. While the Caverns Grill is located above ground, we enjoyed the unique experience of dining as part of the tour in the Crystal Room restaurant, deep inside the cavern itself. The cave itself is one of the largest dry caverns in the United States. We dropped 200 feet below the surface into a vast, silent world where the air stays a constant 56 degrees Fahrenheit. Since it is a dry cave, you will not find the typical stalagmites or stalactites. Instead, the enormous chambers hold unique geologic formations and layers of fascinating human history. The cavern is home to the world’s deepest hotel suite, emergency supplies from the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the underground dining area where we ate, all contributing to the deep, dark mystery of this incredible underground world.
