On the calm Cornish morning of Friday the 18th June 2002, with the sea looking almost polite… a fishing crew spotted something that didn’t belong. At first it was just a shape—a dark mass against the glittering water. Driftwood, maybe. A buoy that’s broken loose. But as they drew closer, the shape turned into a human body, floating in the Channel, five miles off the Lizard Peninsula. The crew of the Clairvoyant stood there with mouths wide open, shocked by such a frightening sight, and when they finally managed to bring the mutilated body on board, they realised that what they pulled from the sea wasn’t just a tragedy. It was a riddle soaked in saltwater. Because this man didn’t just drown. He didn’t simply fall overboard and get carried away by the tide. Very quickly, the people tasked with answering that question—how did he die—realised that the sea was only the last chapter. This mutilated saltwater soaked body was about to tell a story of debauchery, evil and death so shocking, it would rock the country as a whole, and with an added twist after the trial finished that opened up a whole host of questions that left people shocked to their core.
