The things I'm going to show you are how to achieve the actual stripes on the lawn, what type of mower you need to cut the stripes into the lawn, which way is the best way to cut the stripes, how long you need to actually cut the grass to make sure the stripes are as visible as possible. And then I'm going to give you a demonstration as how to actually mow the lawn. Right. Let's start off with the basics. What is a striped lawn? Well, a striped lawn is essentially, it's just mowing the lawn in different directions, which bends the grass slightly so that it reflects light in a different way in different parts of the lawn. This creates the contrasting colors, which is ever so popular with a striped lawn. Broadly speaking, there's three different types of mowers. We've got hover mowers, four-wheel mowers and rear roller mowers. Now, a rear roller mower is just like the one here. You've got a big rear roller going all the way across the back of the mower. This is what helps to create the stripe. So, this is the only type of mower that will help you to get the perfect stripes that you're probably looking for. It's really simple. As soon as you push the mower along, it creates a stripe, just like that. Now, I'm going to talk to you about which is the best way to cut the stripes. You can either go straight up and down, side to side or diagonal. To get the best look from your lawn, you need to think about the most common way which you look at the lawn. So, with most houses, like the one behind the camera here, you come out of the house, and you want to look at the lawn in this direction. So, in this garden, it's pretty small, but we're going to cut the lawn stripes in the direction parallel to the line of sight, when you come out of the back of the house. Right. It's important to consider, how long you actually cut the grass. If you cut the grass too short, the stripes might not look as good, and they also won't last as long. To get the best stripe, what you need to do is adjust your lawn mower to cut somewhere between the middle highest cut and the highest cut. This will give you a cut in height of around about 30 to 60 millimeters, and will give you the best stripes on your lawn. Right. Now, I'm going to talk to you about how to actually mow the lawn. Before we can start cutting the stripes, there's a little bit preparation we need to do. So, we need to do a pass or a cut all the way around the edge of the garden. So, when you've got restricted space like this end of the garden and those two sides, we've got some railway sleepers, it's very difficult to turn the mower around. So what you need to do is cut some stripes along the end. In this garden, we are going to do two strips along the back edge of the lawn, which will give us enough space to be able to take the mower that way, turn around and then carve out the stripe on the way back. ♪ [music] ♪ Right. Now, I've cut the strips at the back of the lawn, which gives me enough space to turn the mower around at that end. I'm going to start off on this side of the lawn. I'm going to make my first stripe here.
