Joey Maggard had his first seizure five years ago, and suffered so many debilitating seizures (20-30 a month) that he could not attend school for the second half of his 6th grade year and his mother had to sit in the bathroom every time he showered. After years of trial and error with standard epilepsy medications, his care team from the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute performed a delicate surgery to remove the sections of his brain that were causing his seizures -- without damaging neighboring tissue responsible for essential motor function. The surgery was preceded by several days of brain mapping, where a grid of electrodes is placed directly on the brain to pinpoint exactly where the surgery can be performed. Joey has been seizure-free since his surgery. He returned to his Lincoln County school in March and is cleared to play sports as of June 1.
