This past Monday afternoon, San Bernardino County Fire’s Large Animal Rescue Team was called to assist with a 38-year-old horse that had been down for over 8 hours in Piñon Hills. The animal’s owner had tried all day to help her up without success and reached out for assistance. While en route, fire crews contacted veterinarians from a pre-established list. Advanced Equine and Small Ruminant Veterinary Services answered the call and happened to already be in the area. Without hesitation, they responded to the scene to assist fire personnel. After a thorough assessment, the vet recommended attempting a lift to give the horse a chance at recovery. Crews from Rescue 305, Large Animal Rescue 305, and Medic Engine 14 worked together to move the horse into position using a glide board and rope system, then set up a large animal tripod and Becker Sling. With a carefully coordinated effort and an 8:1 rope mechanical advantage system, the horse was safely lifted to her feet. She remained in the harness briefly to allow circulation to return, and moments later, was released and able to stand and walk on her own. The attending veterinarian and vet tech monitored her closely as she showed promising signs of recovery—including good hydration. The horse’s owner, holding back tears, was incredibly grateful to see her companion back on her feet. We’re proud of the teamwork and coordination between SBCoFD and Advanced Equine and Small Ruminant Veterinary Services that helped a beloved companion rise after a difficult day.
