Streets STORYLINE: Shock and uncertainty loomed over Venezuelans on Thursday after the U.S. government announced new travel rules affecting dozens of countries, including Venezuela. President Donald Trump on Wednesday resurrected a hallmark policy of his first term, announcing that citizens of 12 countries would be banned from visiting the United States and those from seven others would face restrictions. The new ban includes Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. There will be heightened restrictions on visitors from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. The announcement shocked the family of Venezuelan 24 year old María Aldana, who has long worked multiple jobs to support her brother’s dream to study engineering in the United States. Aldana said that her distraught brother, who enrolled at a Southern California university two years ago, called the family crying Wednesday night. ''With all the effort we made, as a family, now he can’t be there,'' she said , sitting at a plaza in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, with her eyes welling after noting the family had spent more than $6,000 to help get her brother to the U.S, which he did legally. She added that he is awaiting more information from school officials to better understand how his student visa will be affected by Trump’s travel ban. The decision is a significant blow to Venezuelans who were already limited in their U.S. travel plans since both governments broke diplomatic relations in 2019. The ban takes effect Monday at 12:01 am, a cushion that may avoid the chaos that unfolded at airports nationwide when a similar measure took effect with virtually no notice in 2017. Trump, who signaled plans for a new ban upon taking office in January, appears to be on firmer ground this time after the Supreme Court sided with him.
