June 14, 2025 Welcome to “The Adventures Of Eaglet E3-03!” This is Part 5 of an ongoing series documenting young bald eagle, E3-03, as narrated by E3-03 himself. His journey begins in Part 1 where he is developing his flying ability, hops, perching on low branches, testing his balance and control. All from his nest. As he is turning 10 weeks old, the soon to be fledgling, slips and falls from his nest tree during a high branching attempt. Technically, the day he enters his fledging window, or first flight, is the same day he actually flies even if it’s by accident. Poor E3-03, also known lovingly as Squee by his dedicated viewer base. He falls to the forest floor, but is able to make his way back to his nest 100 ft up in a Pine Lolly tree with the help of his parents. Parts 2 through 4 chronicle E3-03’s life after the accidental fledging, also known as a “fludge.” As background, E3-03 was born on January 30, 2025, to Eagle parents, Andria II (Mother) and Alex II (Father). Against all odds, this eagle family has prevailed and had a successful nest in terms of producing one strong, smart and healthy offspring, E3-03. These bald eagle parents had the deck stacked against them from the start of breeding season when they decided to mate and take ownership of the E3 nest in Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana. The territory they claimed overlooks Kincaid Lake and is a wildlife habitat ideal for Bald Eagle nests and the raising of eaglets. Unfortunately, Mom and Dad are both young adult eagles and new to one another as a mated pair and new to parenting. Many firsts for these young parents. No sooner did they produce two eggs when they were voraciously assaulted by intruder eagles and other birds of prey for their territory. The unending fighting and defense went on for a month. Both inexperienced parents had to defend their territory while also protecting and providing for 2 eggs successfully hatched (E3-03 and E3-04) in their nest. Terrible storms with heavy rain and winds affected their ability to hunt as well. Fishing was poor. The animals in the forest hide during storms. A lack of food resources complicated matters as both parents fought non-stop with aggressive intruders challenging them for their territory. As a result, Mother Eagle, Andria II, experienced an inhibition of prolactin, the maternal hormone responsible for eaglet care and bonding . Replaced was pure adrenaline, aggressiveness and stress due to fighting. Eventually Alex II and Andria II were successful in dominating their competition with no further challenges to their newly established territory and nest. This was to the detriment, sadly, of the passing of their youngest eaglet, E3-04. E3-03’s aggression towards its younger sibling was a matter of survival. The entire family was in a state of turmoil with little food and peace. But they prevailed with E3-03 who has shown incredible resiliency, self-reliance and intelligence critical to all developing young eagles. E3-03 captured the hearts of many dedicated viewers. And with the help of Kisatchie National Forest Wildlife Biologists and Rangers and comitted and knowledgeable Live Chat Moderators, we, the viewers, are able to learn about bald eagle behavior and how they react and navigate difficult circumstances and situations. In Part 5, we see E3-03 begin to show more independence and learning as he prepares to eventually leave home as a new juvenile. Under the careful guidance of his parents we see how he manages to reserve his energy from countless flights from his nest tree to his perch tree .08 miles away. We see how he learns to claim and defend his food with a ferocity common to successful young juvenile eagles once out on their own as hunting will not be mastered until after the first year. It is a fascinating and entertaining glimpse into the few months we are able to witness eaglets become fledglings. We are fortunate and thankful for KNF for providing us this opportunity and for the dedicated live chat moderators who help viewers understand what is happening before their very eyes. This is a special eagle family. I hope you continue to watch them until E3-03’s dispersal. I took the liberty of editorializing the narrative based on what E3-03 might be thinking based on his expressions, body language and vocals. E3-03 is highly entertaining to watch. A very charming, vocal, curious and outgoing juvenile bald eagle. The camera set up and mic are spectacular. This nest is one of two nests in the Kisatchie National Forest with live stream camera access. Thank you for watching! Please subscribe for upcoming parts and for more eagle content.
