🎥 Commemorating World Refugee Day by Spotlighting Dominic Amanya, Founder and CEO of Kakuma Social Agri-ventures, championing climate-smart agriculture; Every year on June 20th, the world commemorates #WorldRefugeeDay, a global occasion established by the United Nations to honour the strength, courage, and perseverance of refugees worldwide. The 2025 theme is a rallying cry to not only protect but also empower those forcibly displaced, especially young refugee leaders addressing today’s global challenges. As part of our #ICIL2025 series, we are honoured to feature Dominic Amanya, Displaced by conflict from his country, Dominic found refuge in Kenya at Kakuma Refugee Camp, but rather than wait for aid, he created impact. Driven by a bold vision to combat food insecurity, unemployment, & climate change, Dominic launched Kakuma Agri-Ventures, a thriving model of climate-smart agriculture & agribusiness empowerment within the refugee camp. Through solar-powered irrigation, drought-resistant crops, & training in regenerative farming, his social enterprise is increasing local food production, building youth resilience, & reducing dependency on external aid. His work is a real-time solution to overlapping challenges, resource scarcity, youth exclusion, & the climate crisis. 🔸 Dominic’s model is intentionally inclusive, & gender-responsive. By empowering young refugee women, many survivors of trauma and early marriage, his project ensures that young women are not just participants but co-creators of solutions. From planting to processing, women are leading in sustainable agriculture, market access, and cooperative leadership. This is the true meaning of intersectional climate justice, where inclusion, empowerment, and environmental stewardship go hand-in-hand. 🎯 Impact Highlights: ✅ Trained 30+ young women in climate-resilient practices despite minimal resources ✅ Promoted clean energy via solar-powered irrigation systems ✅ Boosted household nutrition & local food supply ✅ Created youth-led agri-enterprises within the camp and host communities ✅ Fostered inter-community collaboration across tribal and national divides Dominic’s story is not just a testament to resilience; it’s a call to action for ecosystem enablers. 🗣️ “Go where young leaders already are. Support us where we are rooted. Don’t come to rescue – come to collaborate.” He urges: Donors to offer unrestricted funding, Partners to provide peer mentorship, technical capacity-building & market linkage, while key Policy-makers to reform laws around business licensing & refugee mobility 🌍 #ICIL2025 – Inclusion Climate Innovation Labs is a project supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ireland), through the Embassy of Ireland, Kenya, and implemented by the National Secretariat under the Network of Grassroot Organisations and Movements
