Murray Bridge is a city in the Australian state of South Australia, located approximately 78 kilometres (48 miles) east-southeast of the state capital, Adelaide. The city is situated on the traditional lands of the Ngarrindjeri people, who know the area as Pomberuk. The first European explorer to visit the site was Charles Sturt, who camped there on 8 February 1830. The first road bridge spanning the lower Murray River, known as The Murray Bridge, was completed at Edwards Crossing in 1879. To distinguish it from other bridges along the river, it later became known as the Murray River road bridge, Murray Bridge. In 1886, the bridge was converted into a shared road and rail bridge, a role it served until a separate railway bridge was completed in 1925. The bridge was originally designed to accommodate a 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) rail gauge; however, only 1,600 mm (5 ft 3 in) gauge trains ever operated on it. The Murray River, Australia’s longest at 2,508 kilometres, is a key component of the Murray–Darling Basin, flowing through New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. It provides water for millions of people, supports the world’s largest river red gum forests, and plays a crucial role in navigation, agriculture, tourism, and the survival of iconic species such as the Murray cod.
