Anyone who knows Tamil Nadu knows about Periyar and Dravidianism. Tamil Nadu is projected as a progressive, working-class-oriented state that is entirely focused on the upliftment of the oppressed. People might have their qualms about the state, but one thing we can be sure of is that this state is absolutely anti-caste. And to an extent, that is true. The state has a history of implementing progressive policies and schemes that were first of its kind: free lunch to government school kids, benefits for couples of intercaste marriages – these are just some of the many socially progressive steps. A strong anti-caste movement led to a major chunk of Tamils dropping their caste surnames. While there are plenty of progressive moves, it is hard not to see the dark underbelly. Caste atrocities are still a reality.
