Dr. James E. Craigie from the Center for Natural Breast Reconstruction in South Carolina continues our discussion about restoring sensation to the breast during breast reconstruction surgery after a mastectomy. Many women have asked if this can be done after you have had DIEP flap. He begins by telling us sensation is restored during the time of the flap reconstruction. The nerve has to be come with the vacularized healthy tissue. The nerve graft is used in breast reconstruction when two ends of a nerve cannot always reach each other. This is "bridging the gap" in restoring sensation to the breast. Listen as Dr. Craigie explains why a nerve graft is sometimes used in breast reconstitution surgery. We briefly discuss a registry that is currently gathering data on patient satisfaction after nerve reconstruction. The data for the registry is being done across select centers in the U.S. that are currently using the nerve graft in restoring sensation to the breast.
