Archaeological Discoveries in Toarp: Viking Transformation Among the snow flakes that floated on the terrain of Toarp, on the outskirts of Malmö, a team of archaeologists was preparing to resume the excavations after the winter. Under that impolute white mantle that seemed to hide forever the vestiges of the past, the evidences of a millennial historical occupation were not made to wait. The research team has recovered, thus, some pieces of great importance to understand the cultural and material dynamics in the north of Europe from the second half of the Viking era. The investigation, still in progress, has managed to identify structures and artifacts that show both continuity and cultural transformation elements in a key moment of the Nordic history. The deposit illustrates the transit of the pagan societies towards more complex forms of social and economic organization, linked to the new structures of power. The archaeological site of Toarp is located in an area that, for centuries, allowed as a point of connection between different nucleis of human activity, although in the region was more complex. This exchange of ceramic forms and techniques suggests the mobility of artisans, goods and ideas along the Baltic coasts. Stratigraphic and chronological analyses have confirmed that Toarp's occupation intensified in the second half of the Viking era, a period characterized by political movements, commercial expansion and religious transformation throughout Scandinavia. The recovered remains allow us to glimpse that late phase dominated by co-existence and hybridization of cultural practices. One of the most interesting finds is related to a decorated fibula that presents the image in relief of a currency dedicated to Svend Estridsen, king of Denmark. This fibulas reflects a moment of cultural transition, where the real authority and the new forms of symbolic legitimation become more present in the local communities. The archaeological pieces found in Toarpa point to a stage in which different cultural processes coexisted. This fíbula reflects a time of artistic transition, in which the most strategic features of the area become a characteristic.
