This video counts as Parts 4 & 5 of my Custom SKX Mod Project. Basically, Part 4 is the Yobokies Marked Brushed Aluminum Chapter Ring install and Part 5 is Crystal Times CT037 Blue AR Domed Sapphire Crystal. I had popped off the stock SKX flat Hardlex crystal and black chapter ring with the press tool. Pretty simple and boring, so I didn't bother to record a video about that part. There are plenty of videos by other YouTubers who illustrate how to use a crystal press and perform a crystal swap. I also did not record the actual process of test fitting the Yobokies chapter ring before placing the new NH36 movement with custom modded dial and Yobokies Silver Grand Seiko Diver hands set to aid in aligning the new chapter ring. Again, boring stuff, no secret to it.. I just did my best to visually line up the chapter ring with the dial. When I think I have it lined up good, I carefully place the CT domed crystal over it all, be sure to blow out any dust from the dial, chapter ring and underside of the new crystal, and then use the crystal press to carefully set the crystal and chapter ring in place. I also did not film the actual crystal installation. Again, boring stuff and I really needed the space to get in close myself and visually make sure the crystal is being evenly pressed back into the case straight. I try to explain the careful process of slowly setting the new crystal into the watch as this inexpensive crystal press set, which I think many of use have who do this kind of mod, are not the best quality. They plastic dies that you use to set the crystal are not exactly perfectly even or parallel when the press comes down.. Usually one side is a little lower than the other which can throw off your crystal setting and make it go in at an uneven angle and look tilted. So, as I explain in the video, you just have to slowly press, visually check the crystal, and then rotate around slowly and press the crystal a little more, and repeat this process as necessary until you finally get the crystal well set into the case. After a certain point, it'll be safe(r) to apply more force down onto the crystal to really set it. I use a microfiber cloth on the bottom between the case and bottom die to make sure the watch doesn't somehow get scratched. And, I use a thinner microfiber cloth over the crystal as I press it down. I have to check the alignment of the press and die as it comes down onto the crystal, then place the microfiber cloth inbetween, then carefully press down, then remove the microfiber cloth to check how the crystal is getting set into the case and rotate the watch as necessary to continue pressing the crystal into the case as described above. It's all a meticulous process for sure, but it's all about the details to get a nice custom modded watch you can be proud of. I should mention you want to be sure you REALLY press the crystal into the case at the end if you think you're good to go all the way. The reason being the new aftermarket chapter ring usually doesn't have a notch like the stock one does which helps keep the alignment within reason. Whatever aftermarket chapter ring you use can basically freely spin and rotate around. So, the crystal should be set into the watch as tightly as possible as I believe it is also responsible for securing the chapter ring in place.. The chapter ring gets sandwiched between the crystal and the inside of the watch case. If you don't secure the crystal down enough, it won't be tight against the chapter ring and the chapter ring can still potentially rotate out of place even after everything is placed back together. That is what happened to my watch the first attempt. After the movement was in and the chapter ring and crystal pressed on, the chapter ring had moved and was not aligned. "F-Me?!" I did not want to eject the new crystal and start the crystal install again. I ended up removing the movement and noticed I could fiddle with the chapter ring from the inside of the watch case. I basically had to move it back into location where I thought it was centered, then place the movement back in from the bottom as I held the watch case dial side up so that I could see how the movement fitted back into the case and if the chapter ring was actuall aligned with it. I had to go back and forth several times to be sure I got it as perfect as possible. Once I did, I put the watch back onto the crystal press and carefully applied more pressure to be sure I got the crystal down into the case and as tight as possible.. hopefully, enough where it has enough pressure to hold the chapter ring in place and it will not move by itself in the future. It appears to be the case.. will see in time.
