Frontline voices: 25 years of women, peace and security

The Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda marks its 25th year since the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 – the landmark decision that recognised, for the first time, the vital role of women in preventing conflict, building peace and shaping recovery. Yet a quarter of a century on, its future hangs in the balance. What began as a bold commitment to put women at the centre of peace and security has lost momentum. The language of inclusion is still there, yet the structures to make it real are weak. Budgets are being cut, programmes quietly wound down and women peacebuilders remain on the margins. The gap between words and action grows wider by the day. To debate ways to overcome the pressures undermining both its purpose and impact, join Friends of Europe for the concluding event of our series ‘Frontline Voices: women shaping peace and security’. On this occasion, we will launch the “Frontline Voices” final report, which sets out a series of recommendations to strengthen WPS and improve its implementation. These proposals draw on the insights of policymakers, defence officials, UN and NATO representatives, civil society leaders and some of the original architects of the WPS framework. The report offers clear, practical steps to strengthen WPS and give women a real say in shaping peace and security.
