Introduction: Have you ever heard Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna announce on stage, “Excuse me for singing a rare rāga!” I had never encountered such a moment—until I came across this extraordinary live concert. That brief, candid announcement itself sets the tone for what follows: a concert of rare musical daring, deep scholarship, and sheer aesthetic joy. In many ways, this stands among the greatest concerts sung by the maestro. This vintage recording shines with the splendour of Indian classical music—through its mastery of form, richness of content, perfect complementarity among the artistes, and its remarkable power to transport the listener into another realm of musical experience. The purpose of this description is not to interpret the music for you, but to offer gentle pointers that may guide attentive listening and enhance your personal engagement with the concert. The Album “Vintage Wonder of Muraligānam” is an audio restoration and reconstruction of a live concert featuring an exceptional ensemble: 🔸Sri. M. Balamuralikrishna – Vocal 🔸Sri. M. S. Gopalakrishnan – Violin 🔸Sri. U. K. Sivaraman – Mridangam 🔸Sri. K. Nagarajan – Khanjira From Discovery to Recovery Believed to be recorded in the late 1950s or early 1960s, this concert survived against daunting odds. The original source was a large spool tape, partially damaged by water and fungus, salvaged from a private collection where many irreplaceable recordings were tragically lost to flooding. This lone tape was painstakingly cleaned inch by inch, treated for fungal damage, and digitised with professional assistance. Nearly three hours of audio could be recovered from an estimated four-hour concert. However, the digitised files were initially buried under intense hiss and persistent white noise, rendering the music barely audible. After several unsuccessful attempts, a systematic restoration process—using multiple specialised tools in a carefully planned sequence—eventually yielded encouraging results. While further advances may allow even better restoration in the future, the present audio quality is musically rewarding and eminently listenable. Due to damage at the beginning of the tape, the opening portion of the concert was lost. To preserve continuity, a small segment from another concert of the same era has been sensitively blended in. An Overview of the Concert From the very first moments, listeners will notice a style distinct from BMK’s later decades. The rāgālāpanas here are charged with torrents of intricate bhrigās — fast, tightly packed melodic phrases—executed with astonishing clarity. These are not mere rapid repetitions, but complex note-patterns resembling the sophistication of kalpanā-svaras. The rāgālāpanas unfold seamlessly, with graceful transitions and striking śruti-bhēda (modal shifts), some rarely heard. One such moment—shifting from Abēri’s madhyama to evoke shades of Suraṭi—stands out as a revelation. The freshness of gamakās and sangatis, and the electrifying dialogue between BMK and MSG, create moments of pure magic. The svara-vinyāsam flows with effortless abundance—measured, imaginative, and deeply satisfying—leaving a lasting sense of fulfilment and an irresistible urge to return to the concert again and again. Experiencing the Vintage Wonder Repeated listening reveals ever-deepening layers of artistry: 🔹Each kriti is rendered with focused attention and vocal mellifluence. 🔹A wide emotional spectrum is explored, allowing effortless listener connection. 🔹Rāgas are developed unhurriedly, note by note, with exemplary support from the accompanists. 🔹The balance between intellectual precision and emotional expression is masterful. 🔹Kalpanā-svaras flow in varied speeds, sparkling with rhythmic and melodic brilliance. Ultimately, this is music that resists full verbalisation. Its deepest truths are felt, not analysed. Perhaps the greatest reward of this concert lies in listening to it—again and again—allowing understanding and joy to arise naturally from the heart. We invite you to immerse yourself in this rare vintage experience and rediscover the timeless magic of Muraligānam.
