Pinot gris is called a white wine grape. But look at the skins – they’re pink, grey, even bronze. It’s a mutation of pinot noir. So when you leave the juice on those coloured skins, you get something entirely different. In our Deep Dive blind 🙈 tasting of Skin Contact Whites, the 2024 J.P. Trijsburg ‘Skinzy’ Pinot Gris stood out to our panel of winemakers and sommeliers – proving that skin contact gris is in a league of its own. In the glass: Campari-like aromas of burnt orange, ginger spice, and herbal notes leap out. The palate has lovely verve, body and texture from skin contact, with prickly tannins and electric acidity. Waves of pink grapefruit, pomegranate, resinous orange rind, and white pepper spice. So interesting. Jean Paul Trijsburg ferments the juice on skins for around a week – turning this wine pink and developing the spice, savoury characters, and soft grip on the palate. A multiple-time Young Gun of Wine Awards finalist, he’s Dutch-born, studied in Bordeaux, chased vintages across Europe and South America, before landing in Australia in 2012 to make wonderfully obscure wines with a natural bent. The fruit comes from the Dash Farm site in Faraday (bottom end of Bendigo, next to Heathcote and Macedon Ranges). This is an Australian take on Italy’s Ramato pinot grigio style – ‘Ramato’ means ‘coppery’ – from Friuli. People often relegate skin contact whites to the “fun” category – but this wine is so detailed, it challenges your expectations. 🔗 Related links 📝 Full Deep Dive write-up: https://younggunofwine.com/australias... #YoungGunOfWine #DeepDive #AustralianWine #WineExperts #BlindTasting #PearlsFromTheDeepDive #SkinContactWhites #OrangeWine #PinotGris #PinotGrigio #Ramato #Marijuana
