Valentinian II was born in 371 CE, the son of Emperor Valentinian I and Justina. He became emperor at just four years old in 375, after his father’s death, though real power was held by his mother and advisors. He ruled parts of the Western Empire while his half-brother Gratian ruled Gaul and Britain. After Gratian’s assassination in 383, Valentinian II was left as the sole legitimate Western emperor but was overshadowed by usurpers and generals. Religiously, he was influenced by his mother’s Arian beliefs but often clashed with the powerful bishop Ambrose of Milan. In 392, at the age of twenty-one, he was found dead by hanging under suspicious circumstances, possibly murdered or forced into suicide. His death weakened imperial authority in the West and opened the way for further instability.
