I acquired this Rick Reeves 24" Saxony in 2024. It was crafted in Iowa by Reeves after 1994 (there is no date on the wheel, only his signature). Rick retired and sold his shop in 2001. This spinning wheel was in deplorable condtion having been stored in unsuitable conditions. As I disassembled the wheel for restoration, I discovered that this wheel had never been spun on. Marge, Rick's wife tested every wheel before it left the shop. I found the yarn that she had spun wrapped on the shaft between the bobbin and flyer- as a packing/shipping cushion. The wheel was completely disassembled, stripped and re-finished with Danish oil. All of the leathers were reconditioned using leather cleaner and neat's foot oil. New footman leather was installed. My husband has the skill to do lathe work, thus he turned a distaff to resemble as closely as possible- one that Rick might have made. The wheel came with one original bobbin, but Carl Spriggs of Rocheport, Missouri was taught by and authorized to make replacement bobbins for Rick's wheels. I ordered two bobbins from Carl, and they are beautiful replicas. If you are considering a Reeves wheel, I encourage you. They are solid built and beautiful to spin on. Our American custom wheel builders were and are true craftsmen.
