Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 “Choral” Symphony Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Allegro ma non tropp, un poco maestoso Molto vivace Adagio molto e cantabile Finale (“Ode to Joy”) The Symphony No. 9 has been called a masterpiece, the ne plus ultra of symphonic works – in Beethoven’s own era and still today. It’s an extremely powerful work, which revolutionized all of music, and set a standard by which other works are measured. There has even been something of a ghoulish superstition in classical music that postulates a composer will die after completing their ninth symphony. Beethoven, Bruckner, Dvorak, Mahler and Vaughan Williams are each supposed to have suffered the Curse of the Ninth! Beethoven had started a 10th Symphony but it was incomplete at the time of his death in 1827. Beethoven’s “Choral” Symphony was premiered in Vienna on May 7th, 1824, by which time he was completely deaf. It was the first symphony by a major composer to incorporate vocal soloists and chorus. The stirring words were drawn from Friedrich von Schiller’s poem “Ode to Joy”, advocating all of humanity to live in peace and harmony together. Fittingly, it was adopted as the European National Anthem in 1972, and the European Union in 1985.
