Aired 19 /04 2017 Glenda Gilson on her best kept secret for years - Glenda was 7 years old danced on stage with the King of Pop Michael Jackson during his famous concert at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on 31 July 1988 when Michael came to Cork to perform at the famous venue Evoke logo search articles 'I’m a mother now and it’s a far cry from when I was single running around' Glenda Gilson happy out of the limelight 12th September 2022 Glenda Gilson is doing what mums do best — multitasking. Ah, the juggle is real. ‘I’m up in the bedroom, just seeing how long I can get away with it,’ she jokes. Life with her and husband Rob McNaughton’s two adorable little sons, Bobby and Danny — who turn two and four next month — is ‘chaotic’ she admits, but you just know she wouldn’t have it any other way. ‘They are two headbangers,’ she laughs. ‘Myself and Rob bring them out, run the legs off them, we go everywhere to make sure they are good and tired, and some nights it just doesn’t matter, they’ll go to sleep and be running the corridors an hour later,’ she says incredulously. If Glenda is exhausted from running around after them, she certainly doesn’t let it show. In a series of shots taken on Grafton Street this week to launch Her Heart Matters — the new campaign by Irish Heart Foundation to raise awareness for women’s cardiac health — it looks like not a year has gone by since her modelling heyday, when posing for photocalls was an almost daily occurrence. This week, instead of the ubiquitous bikini that was par for the course during the 2000s, Glenda is dressed in a vibrant red dress with matching umbrella. She looks radiant, glossy and fit, her glowing skin and bright eyes belying any hint of sleep deprivation; her figure as toned as it was two decades ago. However, Glenda reveals, it could all have gone very wrong — thanks to the Irish weather, and her natural curls. Again, she had a small window to work with. ‘The rain was threatening to ruin it all,’ she laughs. ‘I told the photographer, don’t stop between pictures, we have to work quickly. My hair is going to go, I’ll be like Mad Mary in a few minutes. And after the blow dry too typical.’ This self-deprecating talk is typical of many of us Irish women and proves that Glenda really is down to earth. ‘I know I like to enjoy my life and eat and drink but the thing about it is to make sure that you have balance and maybe be healthy during the week and leave the boldness until the weekend. It’s just a reminder to treat yourself well and make small healthy changes Glenda, once one of Ireland’s most sought after models, became a familiar face on our screens as a presenter with Xposé on TV3 which was unceremoniously axed in October 2019 after 12 years on the air, taking presenters Glenda, Cassie Stokes and Karen Koster with it. She’s missed from our screens, I tell her. In fact, it seems since then, she’s been a little — dare I say it — quiet? ‘Quiet?’ she laughs in disbelief. ‘My world is anything but quiet. I don’t get a second with the boys but I’m very happy with that. I get to dip in and out and do a bit of work here and there but still be here for the lads and that’s good. I’m happy as Larry with that. Glenda, who turned 40 during lockdown, spent the pandemic in her stunning home at Saggart Lakes in Co Dublin with her new son, toddler and husband Rob. ‘Imagine how depressing that was, turning 40 in lockdown with no party,’ she laughs. She won’t comment on a recent article by the Sunday Times regarding a notice given by the Residential Tenacies Board to vacate their rented home over rent arrears, which the couple says relates to a long-running dispute with the landlord over the cost of repairs. When I mention Xposé’s demise again, her initial response is a little guarded. ‘Oh do we have to go through this? It’s old news, it really is,’ she says, and I can almost hear her rolling her eyes, although there is a lightness to her voice. Presenter and TV personality Glenda Gilson on the end of Xposé years on from its demise in tellyland in Ireland ‘You’re bringing me back now, sure that went when I was on maternity leave for Bobby,’ she says, when asked if she was saddened or shocked by the decision to take the show off air, which Pat Kiely, managing director of Virgin Media Television said at the time reflected ‘changing tastes and media consumption’. ‘It was a long time ago at this stage and we have all moved on. I’m a mother now and it’s a far cry from when I was single running around the place. I wouldn’t be able to do any of that now. I don’t think any of us could,’ she says. ‘Ah look it was a great time,’ she adds, softening. ‘Twelve years of madness. I loved being on the telly or in front of the camera, sure Jesus I’ve had my mug in front of it for long enough,’ she says, referring to her early start in modelling at the tender age of three. I get the feeling it won’t be long before we see her lighting up our small screens again.
