St Bartholomew the Great, the London’s oldest church, founded in 1123 as an Augustinian Priory.

The Church has enjoyed over 900 years of continuous service, as a Priory from 1123 to 1539, and as a parish church since then. Over this long period The Priory , then Church and its buildings have faced many challenges. In 1250 The Archbishop of Canterbury arrived to demand taxes from the Priory, and despite being welcomed with a liturgical procession, responded with violence, resulting The sub-prior and many Canons were wounded in the fight. After the Henry VIII dissolution of all Monasteries in 1539, the nave, started from this point of video, was demolished. Also, the chapels on the north side of the Quire and the whole the North Transept were turn down. Over the centuries some parts of the church fell into a ruinous state. Fortunatelly, this decay was reversed in the 19th and 29th centuries, with the bulk of the work being undertaken over 1884 - 1921 under the architect Sir Aston Webb. But the church has been fortunate to avoid the Great Fire of London in 1666, because the old walls of the Priory act as a firebreak before the flames could reach the church. During the second WW at the moment of bombing , the Church Curate, the Reverend Newell Wallbank, kicks incendiary bombs from the Church roof, and saving the Church from bomb damage.
