The whole neighborhood feels wrapped in a warm vintage filter — cold air, but filled with gentle light.Built in 1951-1952 for Shanghai’s first industrial workers, Caoyang was the birthplace of New China’s “Workers’ New Village.” Seventy years later, skyscrapers surround it, yet step inside and time stands still: red-brick buildings, retro mailboxes, aunties dancing in the square, grandpas laughing over Chinese chess… Life here is still the most authentic, laid-back Shanghai life.Many have forgotten that China’s first workers’ village even exists, but it never faded. It remains a quiet pearl set right in Putuo District. In winter, the plane tree avenues become golden tunnels, and even the air smells sweet.
