Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Edward L. (“Bud”) Bowie is a former Professor in the Department of Military History and inter-departmental teaching team leader at the US Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth Kansas. In 1980, he received a Regular Commission in the Field Artillery as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the ROTC program at Washington & Lee University. He holds Baccalaureate degrees in Anthropology & Sociology, a Masters degree in Military History from the University of Kansas, and is a graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College and the Joint Forces Staff College. LTC Bowie served 6 foreign tours of duty including combat tours in Bosnia and Saudi Arabia. He was a senior advisor for strategic plans and policy to the Commander of NATO Forces in Bosnia and was Chief of War Plans for Allied Land Forces Central Europe. He retired from active military service in 2004 where after he served as a senior civilian Instructor at the Command and Staff College until 2013. Since 2014 he has been a semi-retired adjunct faculty member teaching the American Military History course at NIU.
