In this episode, I'm finally closing up a huge gap in the lounge ceiling / bedroom floor of my 400-year-old stone house on Croatia's Dalmatian coast. The previous owner had planned to install a staircase here, leaving a large opening between floors. But it never really fit with my vision for the house — especially since I've got something very different in mind instead of a regular staircase. So the plan was to fill in most of the gap to gain extra bedroom floor space upstairs, while keeping the structure strong and sympathetic to the original stone building. That meant installing heavy structural beams, lifting them up and down more times than I care to admit — all single-handed, with zero formal building experience. Just problem-solving, mistakes, and figuring things out as I go along. As always, this renovation is about learning, adapting, and respecting the character of the house... with a Maltese dog supervising 🐶 If you're interested in: Restoring old stone houses DIY structural work (the hard way) Renovating abroad with no experience Or just watching someone wrestle beams solo You're in the right place. 👉 Subscribe to follow the full renovation journey 👉 New episodes every week
