Meet Dr. Mateus Pepinelli, Assistant Professor of Biology at Laurentian University. An expert in entomology, his research explores the systematics, biology, and ecology of aquatic insects, and more recently, honey bees and environmental DNA (eDNA). From 2019 to 2023, he led the national BeeCSI project, a Genome Canada initiative focused on identifying stressor-specific biomarkers in honey bees across the country. At Laurentian, Dr. Pepinelli continues to investigate the challenges facing pollinators, especially how climate change is shifting plant flowering patterns and disrupting plant-pollinator interactions. As an Innovation Fellow, he is leading the development of a non-invasive eDNA air-sampling device to monitor climate-induced changes in pollination networks. His work combines scientific research, community engagement, and collaboration with Northern Ontario beekeepers and Indigenous knowledge holders. Dr. Pepinelli also teaches General Entomology, a course that introduces students to the biology, behavior, and ecological roles of insects. From insect morphology and physiology to fieldwork around campus and Northeastern Ontario, students gain hands-on experience studying one of the most diverse and adaptable groups of organisms on the planet. Whether you're curious about bees, passionate about biodiversity, or interested in real-world research, this course offers a unique opportunity to explore the science of insects, and the important roles they play in our environment. 👉 Ready to explore your future in science?
