Morreu após cair de uma varanda durante uma perseguição policial. Em 18 de março de 1994, o Departamento de Polícia de Los Angeles, atendeu a um chamado de que um "homem negro nu agindo como louco" no apartamento. Relataram que Lewis tentou escapar dos oficiais e começou a subir nas varandas externas. Quando ele chegou ao último andar houve uma briga. Enquanto estava na sacada superior, a polícia usou um "taser" (arma de eletrochoque) em Lewis três vezes. Lewis caiu da varanda, sofrendo extensos ferimentos na cabeça. Depois de ser mantido vivo por um ventilador por várias horas, a decisão foi tomada para acabar com as medidas de prolongação de vida, agindo sob a orientação do hospital. Lewis morreu no hospital naquela noite. O legista designado pela polícia de Los Angeles considerou a morte como suicídio.
