Ever wondered how the loudness tap on vintage GM radios really works? In this video, I dive deeper into the AC Delco / General Motors 61HFM3 circuit using LTspice simulations to uncover how the volume and tone controls interact in 1970s GM car radios — including Chevrolet, Pontiac, Cadillac, Buick, and even Lear Jet audio systems. By modeling both the lower and upper halves of the volume pot and the unique loudness tap, I reveal how these controls shape the frequency response across real-world volume settings. We also explore why virtual loudness tap resistor mods don’t behave the same way — and what happens when you (eventually) adapt this circuit for guitar amplifiers. 📎 Links to the Sam’s Photofact, LTspice files, and related videos are included below.
