Recently Will Prowse surprised me by commenting that a small ganged DC breaker was a good solar disconnect for series PV panels. I've been telling people for a long time that breakers shouldn't be used as switches. But these particular breakers are actually sold as disconnects so I thought I should dig deeper into the issue. So I bought some and ruined them by taking them apart. The next video in this two part series will look at the guts of a more traditional rotary DC disconnect switch, when I ruin one of them. Here's a link to the breakers I took apart. I bought the 400VDC/30Amps. They are a nice piece of equipment, sort of. I wouldn't use them closer than 50% or rating, but they should work fine for moderate voltages: https://amzn.to/4gVLXGz They also sell a 1000V/30A version that I've ordered just to see what's different: https://amzn.to/3W3gt9E And here's the solar disconnect switch I'll be disemboweling as soon as it shows up in the mail: 1200VDC/32A four pole. https://amzn.to/40cAQnd Product Links to other stuff I like and am testing. Batteries Other 48V solutions, particularly rack mount systems, are more suitable for smaller installations or installations where smaller units of modularity is beneficial, but for me the lower cost per KWh, ease of installation, ability to scale rapidly, and appearance made wall mount batteries preferable.
