It's that time of year again where we look back and reflect on moments captured by our photographers who have been documenting life during another challenging year in North East England. Just like the tumultuous year which preceded, 2021 was once again dominated by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic which continues to have an unprecedented impact across the UK. The nation continued to show incredible resilience in the face of adversity, as the year began with a third lockdown, government coronavirus restrictions remained in place for several months before the gradual re-opening of hospitality, leisure and retail venues, culminating in 'Freedom Day' in July when almost all restrictions came to an end. Throughout the year NHS staff and volunteers have delivered the largest ever vaccination programme in its history, with over 45 million people now fully vaccinated. 2021 will always be remembered by Newcastle United supporters who celebrated wildly into the night as the long-awaited Saudi Arabian backed takeover of the club led by Amanda Staveley finally materialised, ending Mike Ashley's reign and marking the beginning of a new footballing era on Tyneside. The weather made the headlines when the North East was battered by Storm Arwen, some of the most intense winds in many years caused wide-scale damage to properties and vehicles and left thousands without power. Our photographers have captured many other moments during another challenging year, covering everything from football fans watching in agony as England lost on penalties in the Euro 2020 final to Italy and Anti-racism campaigners taking the knee at St James' Park in solidarity with the young players who were racially abused during the same game. We were there when Sam Fender rocked his home city, The Great North Run returned, the moon landed inside Durham Cathedral, actress Brenda Blethyn was filming the latest series of Vera, and there was the annular solar eclipse - here are some of the best photographs we captured in the North East in 2021.
