Enjoy this walk through the historic Northampton County Court Green in Eastville, Virginia. Eastville is a central, small town and the county seat for Northampton County, located on the southern end of the Eastern Shore in Virginia. Northampton County originally encompassed the whole Eastern Shore and under the name Accomac was one of the original eight shires (formed in 1634) of the Virginia Colony. The name refers to the Accawmack Indians who resided on the Eastern Shore. (The first permanent English settlement was Jamestown in 1607, the first town of the new Virginia Colony). The historic Court Green is also known as the Northampton County Courthouse Historic District. The Court House (of 1731) on the grounds is the 3rd court house. More recent court houses built were 1795 (not preserved) and 1899 which now houses an exhibit room and county offices. (The current General District Courthouse was built in 2007, and is just west of the historic court green.). The historic grounds also have the Clerk’s Office (of 1800). Current court records go as far back as 1632, the original records being kept in homes, then in a subsequent clerk’s office of approximately 1710 (not preserved), and then in the Clerk’s Office (of 1800). Another clerk’s office was also built near 1850-1875 (not preserved), and then the clerk’s office was located in the 1899 Courthouse. The Clerk’s office is now in the modern 2007 Courthouse. The Northampton records are the oldest continuous court records in the United States. Jails were located on the court green at different times, in various buildings. A small one-room Debtor’s Prison (of 1814) is on the grounds. A 1907 Jail (closed) remains on the grounds and may be restored in the future. (In January 2021, County Supervisors voted to remove the Confederate monument that was placed on the grounds in 1914. Crews removed it in August 2021.).
