MALDIVES SHARK SANCTUARY ENDANGERED The Maldives Shark Sanctuary was not established overnight, But the decision to open a Gulper Shark Fishery in Oct 2025 was. It took the current government just 2 months to unravel years of conservation efforts, with zero technical evidence backing the move. The shark fishing ban was introduced gradually over several years for important reasons. The evident depletion of shark species observed across all areas of their habitat was a primary factor. Shark populations in Maldives were being depleted to concerning levels due to historical shark fishing. Something had to be done. Small steps did not work. Eventually, all shark fishery was banned in the Maldives in 2010, with the country becoming a sanctuary for these depleted shark populations. Notably, historical shark fishery had decimated the gulper shark population to an estimated 97% decline. This is the latest available data. Strangely, the government made no effort to assess the present status of the Gulper shark population before deciding to open the Gulper shark fishery in 2025. Gulper sharks are a globally endangered species, and the 3 Gulper shark species recorded in the Maldives are on the IUCN Red List of globally threatened species. As usual, no lessons have been learned by the government from the historical reality that continues to remain critically relevant today. #HimaayathugeHimaayathugaa #SaveMaldives
