Peace and blessings be upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his family, his companions, and all those who follow his guidance. Respected brothers and sisters, Today, I would like to briefly speak about the Fiqh of Fasting and Zakat, two of the most important pillars of Islam that teach us discipline, compassion, and obedience to Allah. First, the Fiqh of Fasting Fasting in the month of Ramadan is obligatory upon every adult Muslim who is physically and mentally capable. Fasting begins from dawn and continues until sunset. During this time, a Muslim must abstain from food, drink, and marital relations. However, fasting is not only about staying hungry and thirsty. It is also about controlling our tongue, eyes, and behavior. A fasting person should avoid lying, backbiting, arguing, and all sinful actions. Fasting teaches us patience, self-control, and sincerity. It reminds us of the suffering of the poor and strengthens our connection with Allah. Those who are sick, traveling, elderly, or unable to fast are given concessions in Islamic law, which shows the mercy and flexibility of Islam. Second, the Fiqh of Zakat Zakat is a compulsory charity and an essential pillar of Islam. It becomes obligatory on Muslims who possess wealth above a certain limit, known as Nisab, for one lunar year. The purpose of Zakat is to purify wealth and help those who are in need, such as the poor, the needy, and others mentioned in Islamic teachings. Zakat promotes social justice and removes greed from the heart. It builds love and unity among Muslims by ensuring that wealth circulates within society. When a Muslim gives Zakat sincerely, it not only benefits the receiver but also increases blessings in the giver’s wealth and life. Conclusion Fasting builds our relationship with Allah through discipline and worship, while Zakat builds our relationship with society through kindness and generosity. Together, they create a balanced Muslim personality that is spiritually strong and socially responsible. May Allah enable us to understand the true spirit of fasting and Zakat and allow us to practice them sincerely. Ameen. Mohammad Abrar Qasmi
